Course Descriptions for 2009

WOODWORKING COURSES


Shaping with a Drawshave at the Shaving Horse
INTRODUCTION TO GREEN WOODWORKING
This is a beginning course in using freshly cut timber or Green wood.  Students will walk the woodlands with the instructor identifying local hardwoods and learn how to gather hickory bark.  The April, June and September, 2009 sessions will focus on constructing a simple stool. The May 2009 session will focus on constructing garden fences, hurdles and agricultural tools such as wooden hay rakes, pitch forks, etc.

Shaving Horse SHAVING HORSES AND OTHER CLAMPING DEVICES
Build a shaving horse, the versatile clamping device used by chair makers, coopers and basket makers. The student will make a shaving horse with one of three optional clamping systems. Learn how to use and sharpen Drwaknives, spoke shaves and other shaving tools.
3 Days, $425 + $125 materials fee


Don Weber Turning on a Pole Lathe
BUILD A POLE LATHE
Students will construct their own spring pole lathe (bow lathe) and learn basic turning techniques, as well as looking into other turning devices such as the bicycle gear driven lathe featured in Popular Woodworking Magazine.
3 Days, $350 + $60 Materials fee


Square End Table
MY SMALL SQUARE TABLE
Build a beautiful and simple square end table with tapered legs and turned tenons. This is an introductory course in basic joinery.
3 Days, $350 + $45 material fee


Country Bench
STOOLS AND BENCHES
A course in constructing trestle benches or hand shaved stools for the kitchen bar or workshop. This is an introductory course in green woodworking and basic joinery.
5 Days, $485 + $110 Benches material fee


17th Century Jointed Stool THE 17th CENTURY JOINTED STOOL
This stool is an exercise in mortise and tenion joinery and basic turning. It is patterened on the 17th c. jointed English stool found in every pub in the British Isles. The student will learn the use of simple hand tools to make this exceptionally strong piece of furniture.

BUILD A WELSH STICK CHAIR
Build this hand-carved and jointed Cardigan style Welsh Stick chair, a strong and beautiful early style Windsor. The seat is adzed, the spindles shaved at the shaving horse and the turnings done on the spring pole lathe if you choose.
6 Days, $685 + $145 Materials fee

Timber Framing Tools and Practice

BASIC TIMBERFRAME JOINERY
This is a hands-on workshop in basic timber frame joinery.  The student will learn to cut mortise and tenion joints, half lap and bridle joints, dove tail joints and more.  This is an on site experience in building traditional timber structures with hand tools.
3 days, $210


Tool Chest
TOOLBOXES, TREASURE CHESTS AND TANSU
The first three days of the workshop will focus on constructing a tool box/chest using simple table saw joinery, hand planes and scrapers. The remaining two days will be spent making the hand forged hardware, hinges, handles and latches for the chest.

Mastermyr Chest
THE MASTERMYR FIND: RECREATING A VIKING TOOL CHEST
This is a course in recreating an ancient Viking tool chest dated to 1000AD.  Unearthed in a bog in Gotland, Sweden in 1936, the chest was filled with woodworking and blacksmithing tools and had a keyed lock as well as several pad locks within.  More information on the Mastermyr Find can be found on the internet at: www.netlabs.net/~osan/Mastermyr/Catalog.html

In the wood studio, learn how to construct this ancient chest with the same simple hand tools (adze, bow saw, brace and bits) used to construct the original. In the forge, learn to forge the hinges, hardware and wrought nails that fastened the hinges and lock to the box.

The goal of the class is to learn the use and care of hand tools, and to look into the history of tool use through the centuries. Basic blacksmithing techniques for making and heat treating both tools and hardware will be covered. At the end of the course the student will have a knowledge of tool use as well as a fine tool chest to place them in.

Build a Coracle!
CORACLE MAKING AND REGATTA
This is a three day workshop in making the traditional Welsh coracle or corwg, a canvas covered boat used since early Roman times. The student will construct his/her own Teifi coracle, cover and tar the boat and make the sculling oar used to propel the craft. On the last day of the class the students will assemble on Paint Lick Creek for a regatta down stream.

BLACKSMITHING COURSES



Forged Hook
BASIC BLACKSMITHING
Learn to use fire & forge, tongs & hammer to make hooks, hangers and hard ware. The student will learn how to work the fire, learn proper hammer technique, and the basic process of drawing out, upsetting and creating proper 90 degree bends.
2 Days, $210


Hinges and Hardware
HINGES AND HARDWARE
This is a more advanced course in hinges, handles and simple lock mechanisms. Learn to make the tools to fabricate these items and simple gas forge, Basic fire welding, twisting and punching patterns will be covered.
3 Days, $350. Materials included.


Hammer
TOOL MAKING FOR WOODWORKERS
Learn to make knives and tools for woodworking. Covered will be traditional tools and adzes used by the first Nation people of the Pacific Northwest using high carbon steel.  Heat treating and tempering will be covered as well.
2 Days, $210


Knife BASIC KNIFE MAKING
In this workshop the student will learn to forge high carbon steel knife blades, heat treat and temper blades, make laminated handles for their finished blades and how to sharpen knives.
3 Days, $300
